Developmental Assessments

We assess the child’s strengths as well as their challenges and determine what strategies may be helpful in facilitating the child to reach their potential.

Our experience has shown that the Developmental Assessment involves spending time talking to the parents about what they are looking for in a therapy service, as well as what they perceive their child’s needs to be.

This is why we ask the parents to come in separately before the initial assessment with the child. During this time, we are able to gain a better understanding of the family’s needs and whether as a service we are able to meet those needs.

During the My Therapy House® Initial Assessment, we assess clients using a developmental multi-disciplinary lens. This means two to three therapists are present at the assessment interacting with the client and parent(s) and assessing the client’s various developmental domains, including

  • Parent-child interaction
  • Attention
  • Communication
  • Comprehension
  • Social Skills
  • Emotional Development
  • Fine and Gross Motor Skills
  • Sensory Capacities
  • Behaviour and Transition challenges
  • Listening Skills
  • Music Capacities
  • Play Preferences and Capacities

We assess the child’s strengths as well as their challenges and determine what strategies may be helpful in facilitating the child to reach their potential.

We use different assessment tools, some of which are standardised, some of which are not. We tailor the assessments to suit the client’s needs, developmental level and age range.

Each assessment is written up and presented to the parent within 2 weeks of the assessment taking place. The parent(s) hear lots of information during the assessment, and it is important that they have an opportunity to read what transpired during the session and reflect on this information so they are able to ask questions and have discussions with therapists about their child’s capacities and needs.
